What’s with the Mars, anyway?

Hey diddle diddle,
The Cat and the fiddle,
The Cow jumped over the moon.
The little Dog laughed,
To see such sport,
And the Dish ran away with the Spoon.

Now whether the Cows have developed as much to jump over the moon or not, our men definitely have much to rejoice as they are not too far away from reaching their homeland, Mars!

With Mangalyaan, India joins US, Russia and European Space Agency to have successfully launched missions to Mars. And Mangalyaan will be jumping over from Earth’s orbit to Mars’ orbit, scheduled in September 2014.

So why is this fascination of us Earthlings towards Mars? ..or atleast, why do I care? Ofcourse, I am open to the idea of having a little green Martian brother from another cosmic mother. But there is more to it than that. We believe, water is basic for the existence of any life form. Despite being rather dry and arid now, signs were found that water once flowed on the Red Planet’s surface and even now there is vast amount of water ice beneath the Martian surface. This leads to the speculation that life on Earth might have seeded Mars or vice versa and opens up the possibility that Mars could have once potentially harbored life and maybe it does, even today.

Suddenly the Universe seems like a plethora of endless probabilities…and the diddles and fiddles start making sense! So, don’t you worry Dish, maybe one day you can break a leg with the Spoon too!
